Shaun the Sheep, meanwhile, is one of four programmes shortlisted for the children and young people award.
Life on Mars and Britz will also be in the running at this year's ceremony, to be held on 24 November in New York.
British TV shows dominated last year's ceremony, with prizes going to Little Britain Abroad, How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria? Number of Czechs detained, imprisoned abroad on the rise ...
Kenyan claims 800m gold ...
No EDF takeover of British Energy ...
Sokol New York ...
UN in call for basic sanitation ...
and More4's Death of a President.
Documentary
UK productions are represented in all but two of the 10 categories announced by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Britain's eight nominations put it comfortably ahead of Brazil, up for five awards, and Argentina and Japan, up for four apiece.
They include Strictly Bolshoi, a Channel 4 programme about a British choreographer's experiences working with the Bolshoi Ballet in Russia, and mountaineering documentary The Beckoning Silence.
Lucy Cohu, nominated for best actress two years ago for playing Princess Margaret in The Queen's Sister, is shortlisted for the award again for her role in child abuse drama Forgiven.
More than 600 judges from 50 countries helped decide this year's shortlist, which involved three rounds of judging over a period of six months.
"Every year the International Emmy Awards put the spotlight on the best international television," said Academy president Bruce L Paisner.
"We congratulate the 2008 nominees for setting a standard of excellence and inspiring us all with great television."
