Protests mark the launch of the Olympics ... spokesman for the Dalai Lama says surgeons have successfully removed a gallstone from the Tibetan spiritual leader, just days after doctors had cleared him during a medical check-up.
The Nobel Prize-winning Buddhist elder, seen by many as the embodiment of Tibet's struggle for more freedom in China, was hospitalized in New Delhi on Thursday. After the check-up his aides said the 73-year-old had been cleared to resume foreign travels. In August, the Dalai Lama was admitted to a Mumbai hospital complaining of abdominal discomfort.
