German Agriculture Minister Horst Seehofer is set to become premier of the southern state of Bavaria and the chairman of the ruling party there, the Christian Social Union.
This comes after two party rivals withdrew from the leadership race. The CSU is the sister party to Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats. The current premier, Günther Beckstein, and the CSU chairman Erwin Huber, both stepped down last week after the party suffered its worst result at the polls in half a century.
