She was referring to William Ayers, a member of a 1960s militant group who placed bombs at the Pentagon and the Capitol, who supported Obama's first run for public office in 1995. The Obama campaign described Palin's guilt-by-association attack as "desperate and false".
The escalation in the war of words between the rival White House camps comes one month ahead of the vote and at a time when the Republicans are trailing in the polls.
