US officials say the bail-out must be approved quickly to restore confidence in the financial system. On Monday, the House of Representatives rejected an initial bill, triggering the worst fall on the US stock exchanges in 21 years. Should the Senate pass the package, as is expected, it will increase pressure on the lower house to follow suit when it reconvenes on Thursday.
