A German women's rights activist is among five winners of the Right Livelihood Award, often called the "Alternative Nobel Prize". Monika Hauser, a gynaecologist, received the honour for her work with female victims of sexual violence in some of the world's worst danger zones.
Other recipients included Indian social justice campaigners Khrishnammal and Sankaralingam Jagannathan, Somali women's activist Asha Hagi and US journalist Amy Goodman. The Right Livelihood Awards have been presented annually in the Swedish parliament since 1980. The award is worth around 210,000 euros.
