German Foreign Minister Frank Walter-Steinmeier has confirmed that a group of eleven European tourists who were seized ten days ago in the Egyptian desert have been released.
A military helicopter has flown the five Germans, five Italians, a Romanian and eight Egyptian drivers and tour guides to Cairo for medical examinations. The state news agency MENA quoted Egyptian Defence Minister Hussein Tantawi as saying that half of the abductors had been killed in the operation to free the hostages. Egypt's Tourism Minister Zoheir Garrana said no ransom money was paid.
