Unidentified gunmen have shot dead one of the most high-profile female police officers in Afghanistan.
Officials said Lieutenant-Colonel Malalai Kakar was killed in the southern city of Kandahar as she was driving to her office. Witnesses said her son was wounded in the attack. This year, Afghanistan has seen the most violence since US-led troops overthrew the country's Taliban government in 2001.
