Germans in Bavaria are voting in state elections.
Polls suggest that the region's dominant conservative party, the Christian Social Union, may have difficulty in maintaining its long-standing hold on power. Voter surveys have shown its support falling below 50 percent. The CSU, a sister party to Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, has held an absolute majority in Bavaria since 1957.
