United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon has kicked off the UN General Assembly's annual debate, calling for global leadership.
He pressed the gathering of more than 120 world leaders not to pursue narrow national interests in the face of hard economic times. He said the challenge of global leaders was to tackle the world's worsening financial, energy and food crises. United States President George W. Bush used his address to focus on the so-called War on Terror. President Bush also praised the US's attempts to tackle AIDS and other diseases in Africa.
