Burmese state media report that the government has released just over 9,000 prisoners in a goodwill gesture.
The amnesty was reportedly granted to allow the prisoners to take part in elections planned for 2010. It is not clear if any political prisoners have been released. Opposition figures say they have no news of this. The United Nations has urged Burma to release all political prisoners as part of the country's so called seven-step "roadmap to democracy". Human Rights Watch estimates that Burma has more than 2,000 political prisoners, Iran urged to free HIV pioneers ...
Burma agency makes donor plea ... but the military regime denies that it jails people for their political or religious views. Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the last 19 years under house arrest.
