Israeli President Shimon Peres has asked Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni to form a new government, opening the way for the Kadima party leader to become prime minister.
She will be the second woman to hold the post in Israel's history. An internal ballot last week saw Livni succeed scandal-hit Ehud Olmert as Kadima chairman. Olmert resigned as premier on Sunday. Livni now has 42 days to form a governing coalition. If she fails to do so it will almost certainly trigger a snap parliamentary election.
