10.09.2008 - Deputy defence minister facing abuse of power charges

Bartak told the server he had not yet been informed about the legal complaint.

Euro wrote the case related to the four Iveco MLVs bought without a tender through the company Praga-Export and four Dingo 2 delivered to the Defence Ministry by the company MPI Group.

The Iveco deal was signed by head of the military police Oldrich Kubat with Praga-Export last December.

The vehicles were destined for the Afghan province of Helmand where a group of Czech military police special forces is operating.

Euro writes that the state has paid roughly 119 million crowns for the vehicles.

The Dingos were bought by the military for the Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the Afghan province of Logar.

to earlier information, the four vehicles cost about 140 million crowns, while Euro writes it was 135 million.

Some media has written that the Defence Ministry had bought the Dingos without having published the conditions of the tender. The military intelligence addressed six to eight firms, but only two eventually took part in the tender.

Bartak said the deal was absolutely correct. "This was only done so as the deal was urgent," he said.

The Czech military will buy 15 more armoured vehicles Dingo 2 for 499 million crowns and 15 small Iveco MLV armoured vehicles for 499 million crowns, according to the contracts the Defence Ministry signed, the Euro.cz server wrote last week.

It said that the Defence Ministry had rejected an offer by the BAE Systems for quick supply of much cheaper RG-31 vehicles with a higher ballistic protection.
