The African Union's peace and security council has urged the military junta in Mauritania to release the president.
A statement was issued after a special meeting of the peace and security council at the AU's Addis Ababa headquarters. On Wednesday, President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, the country's first democratically elected leader, and his prime minister were detained when General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz seized control of the capital, Nouakchott, hours after being sacked as head of the presidential guard.
