But a statement read out on local radio did not give a date for the vote. This comes a day after the junta overthrew President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in a coup. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the European Union are among those who have condemned the coup. A statement released by the EU said it endangered the democratic advances made in the West African country in recent years. Mauritanian troops took control of the presidential palace after Abdallahi tried to sack senior army officers whom he accused of trying to destabilise the country. Abdallahi was Mauritania's first democratically elected leader.
