A nationwide strike over the rising cost of living has brought industry in South Africa to a near halt, with tens of thousands of workers holding protest marches in cities across the country.
The strike also hit a wide variety of public services, including schools and public transport. Car manufacturers, mines and the textile industry were all affected. The strike was called by the Congress of South African Trade Unions and is the latest in a series of protests in recent months over rising electricity, food and fuel prices.
