The African Union has blasted an attempt to indict Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for genocide in the country's Darfur region.
African Union chief, Jean Ping, called on the United Nations Security Council to suspend an International Criminal Court investigation of al-Bashir. Ping said attempts to indict the president were like "pouring oil on fire," after meeting the Sudanese leader in Khartoum. Regional powers are worried that an indictment will stall the peace process and cause more problems for the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping effort, UNAMID. Some 9,500 mainly African troops have been deployed, but they suffer from equipment shortages and delays have prevented the force from reaching its full strength of 26,000 troops.
