The executive director of the UN agency UNAIDS has warned that the end of AIDS was nowhere in sight.
Peter Piot, who steps down as UNAID's chief at the end of the year, said that every day, almost three times as many people become newly infected with HIV as those who start taking antiretroviral therapy. The comments coincide with the 17th International AIDS Conference that is underway in Mexico City. 22,000 scientists, policymakers and health workers are meeting for six days until Saturday to discuss ways to combat the HIV/AIDS virus.
