Olympic organisers have announced they are taking "detailed precautions" for Wednesday's Beijing leg of the torch relay after 16 Chinese police officers were killed and another 16 were wounded in the northwest region of Xinjiang on Monday.
The state-run news agency Xinhua said the attackers threw two grenades and hacked at the policemen with knives. The attack occurred in the town of Kashgar, populated by ethnic Uighur Muslims. Xinhua said police had received clues that the East Turkistan Islamic Movement intended to carry out terrorist attacks during the run-up to the Games. Many Uighurs resent Chinese control in the region.
