In Mexico City the 2008 International AIDS Conference has opened with an expected turnout of some 22,000 scientists, delegates and policymakers.
It is the first international AIDS conference to take place in Latin America. Several thousand activists took part in a march on Saturday to protest against AIDS discrimination that is widespread in the continent.
