A stampede at a Hindu temple in northern India has killed at least 68 people, police say.

The temple, in the Bilsapur district, is a pilgrimage site and was thought to be busy with worshippers on the second day of a nine-day festival.

The hilltop temple is some 100km (60 miles) from the city of Chandigarh.

One local lawmaker told Indian media that the stampede happened when a system of fences on the outside of the building broke.

One local TV channel said many of the victims children.

Crowds had gathered at the temple to celebrate the festival of Shravan Navratras, which began on Saturday and runs until 11 August, according to the temple's own website.
