Israel - in a rare move - had allowed 180 members of the pro-Fatah Helles clan, included wounded, to leave Gaza after nine people were killed. The clashes in Gaza's Shejaia district were the deadliest between Palestinian factions since the Islamist Hamas movement took over Gaza in 2007. Tensions have been high since Hamas accused the Fatah clan of being behind a bombing that killed five senior Hamas militants and a girl a week ago. On Sunday, a Hamas spokesman said those returned had been detained for questioning. An Israeli defence spokesman said the wounded would remain in Israel for treatment. The rest would be returned.
