China's president Hu Jintao has held a rare press conference to deflect criticism of media restrictions in China ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
With just one week to go before the Games open, Hu said China would stand by pledges made to lift internet censorship for the Olympics. He also appealed to keep politics out of the Olympics. Strong aftershock hits quake-ravaged China ... International Olympic Committee cut a deal with Chinese officials to limit journalist's access to certain websites which Beijing deems sensitive. On Friday the IOC said the issue was resolved and that access would be unrestricted. China regularly blocks domestic access to certain sites including those of rights groups, some media organisations and the banned spiritual movement Falun Gong.
