The United Nations' atomic watchdog is set to approve an inspections agreement with India that paves the way to finalising a controversial nuclear deal between New Delhi and Washington.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, has told the agency's board of governors that the draft agreement satisfies the IAEA's legal requirements. The accord will open up India's nuclear facilities to IAEA inspections and is a pre-condition for a deal under which the United States will supply New Delhi with nuclear fuel and technology for civilian purposes. The US-Indian deal has come under criticism, with opponents saying it undermines international non-proliferation efforts. India has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
