The governor of the US state of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has cut 22,000 part-time and temporary government jobs in a bid to combat a multi-billion-dollar deficit.

Deutsche Bahn looks set to move ahead with partial privatisation ... workers, student assistants and retired state employees who work under contracts. The move comes after lawmakers failed to approve a budget at the start of the state's new fiscal year on July 1, with Democrats and Republicans at loggerheads over how to narrow the deficit.
