NASA scientists say they now have definitive proof that water exists on Mars.
The announcement was made after the final analysis of a Martian soil sample picked up by NASA's Phoenix lander. Scientists say the chemical test confirms the presence of ice near the Martian north pole. Until now, the evidence for ice on Mars had been circumstantial and based on photos rather than chemical analysis. NASA officials also announced that the Phoenix mission on Mars would be extended by two months until the end of September.
