China has refused to retract its censorship of the Internet ahead of the Beijing Olympics despite widespread calls for unfettered web access by international media and rights groups.
A spokesman for Beijing's organising committee said under Chinese law, only a "small number" of websites, including one run by the cult Falun Gong, remain blocked. Amnesty International, whose own site is also blocked within China, has accused the International Olympic Committee of caving in. The IOC's press chief Kevin Gosper says a recent assurance by IOC chief Jacques Rogge that there would be no censorship had been circumvented when some IOC officials held talks privately with local Chinese games organisers.
