European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson had predicted that unless negotiators made big compromises there was little chance of a deal being struck. To further complicate talks, European automakers and trade unions had earlier objected to proposals for a world trade deal in industrial goods, which they said put the EU's manufacturing industry at risk.
