German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has given a mixed verdict of the situation in Afghanistan, following a four day fact-finding mission there.
Steinmeier said clear development progress had been made in the west of the country as well as the north, where German troops are stationed. However, he added that the overall security situation had deteriorated markedly in the past year. The German foreign minister blamed Pakistan in part for not doing enough to cut off support for a renewed Taliban insurgency.
