28.07.2008 - Serbian ambassador to return to Prague by end of August

Belgrade recalled Veres for consultations after the Czech government recognised the independence for the former Serbian province Kosovo. Serbia resorted to similar steps also in other countries that recognised independent Kosovo. Last week, Serbia announced that its ambassadors would return to the EU countries Prague Uprising: “Do not let Prague be destroyed!” ...

According to the AP agency, this could happen this week. The Serbian embassy in Prague told CTK today that it expected Veres to return to Prague by end of August. The precise date has not yet been set. The Czech government recognised Kosovo in May at the proposal by the Foreign Ministry and Belgrade has resented it. Czech President Vaclav Klaus then sharply criticised the government for its decision. Klaus received Veres before his departure from Prague, saying that by this meeting he intended to "send at least a small signal to the people in the Czech Republic and in Serbia that nothing has changed in the Czechs' attitude to Serbs." "I would be glad if Veres said that he extremely appreciated the fact that I am the only president to have done something like that. I had no idea that I would have to be ashamed," Klaus said in the daily Mlada fronta Dnes in May 24. He said he was very disappointed by Veres's statement that Serbs did not take it personally when such countries as Finland, the Netherlands and Germany recognised Kosovo but that they minded that the Czech government took such step. Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said Kosovo's independence should be viewed as reality, adding that the Czech diplomacy would be able to pursue active policy not only towards Kosovo but also towards Serbia. The Czech Republic has about 500 soldiers stationed in Kosovo. Four dozen countries, including the USA and 20 EU member states, including the Czech Republic, have recognised the independence of Kosovo from Serbia that it declared on February 18.
