Gulf airlines Emirates has taken delivery of the first of 58 Airbus A380 super jumbos at a ceremony in Hamburg.
The rapidly growing Gulf airline is the biggest customer for the A380, which is the world's largest passenger plane. The Dubai-based airline plans to launch the world's first A380 service to the United States on August 1, with a non-stop flight between Dubai and New York. Emirates used today's ceremony to announce orders for 60 other medium-to-long range Airbus planes. The order is welcome news for the European plane manufacturer, which is struggling with the high cost of the euro in its competition with US plane-maker Boeing.
