The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan says up to 70 insurgents have been killed when helicopter gunships and ground forces repulsed an attack by Taliban forces near the Pakistani border.
An ISAF statement said that about 100 insurgents had tried to capture the Spera district centre, 15 kilometres from the border with Pakistan, in the early hours of Sunday. Taliban fighters opened fire on police with guns and rocket-propelled grenades. It was the latest in a series of major battles as violence linked to a Taliban-led insurgency has picked up in recent weeks.
