German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says that despite the critical security situation in Afghanistan, significant progress is being made in building and training its armed forces and police units.

He urged the international community to convince Pakistan to rejoin the fight against terrorism. The German minister is on a four-day visit to review German-funded development and security efforts. Germany currently has 3,500 troops in the country.
