Germany's monthlong celebration of Richard Wagner's operatic canon has opened in Bayreuth. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband, Joachim Sauer, and Bavarian governor Guenther Beckstein are among the guests who arrived at the Festspielhaus for the Bayreuth Festival's opening performance of Wagner's last major work, "Parsifal." It's the last time that the festival will be under the direction of the composer's 88-year-old grandson, Wolfgang Wagner.
After 57 years at the helm, Wolfgang Wagner is stepping down after this year's festival.
