US President George W.
Bush has signed an order expanding sanctions against the government of Zimbabwe. The president said in a statement the move was a direct result of persistent politically-motivated violence by the "illegitimate" regime of President Robert Mugabe. However, Bush said that should ongoing negotiations between Mugabe's regime and the opposition MDC result in a new government that reflected the will of Zimbabweans, the US stood ready to provide a substantial assistance package.
