A narrow cage with a girl dressed in yellow bikini was placed outside the KFC to draw attention of the passers-by. The activists thereby wanted to highlight the problem and make people become interested in the conditions of chickens bred at large farms. The protest was organised by The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) international organisation within its campaign aimed against the KFC as one of the major buyers of chickens from large farms. Representatives of other organisations supporting animal rights also met outside the KFC.
Disguised as chickens, they carried banners reading "KFC is torturing chickens," for instance. CTK has not succeeded in getting in touch with KFC for comments. According to the Association for animals, which took part in the protest, some 90 million broilers, bred in large halls, are annually slaughtered in the Czech Republic. Due to the cruel conditions, many chickens immensely suffer, they cannot move and have fractures and other health troubles, the organisation's representative Dita Michalickova told reporters. The activists demand a better legislative protection of chickens. Last year, the EU passed a directive that may become a basis for further improvement of the conditions in large chicken farms. It is to take effect in 2010, said Michalickova. State Veterinary Authority spokesman Josef Duben told CTK today that the animal protection organisations play a positive role, highlighting the problems. The situation has been improved in the past few years and the EU directive is a positive step, he added.
