German Chancellor Angela Merkel has held talks with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Berlin, focused mainly on strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
The Iraqi premier was welcomed by Merkel with full military honours. Al-Maliki's two-day trip closely follows a visit this month by Economy Minister Michael Glos to Baghdad, aimed at demonstrating Germany's strong interest in reviving economic and business ties. Iraq and Germany have a history of strong partnership, with bilateral trade reaching about four billion euros a year in the 1980s.
