He was welcomed by Chancellor Angela Merkel with full military honours before the two leaders were scheduled to hold talks. Al-Maliki's visit follows close on the heels of a visit this month by Economy Minister Michael Glos to Baghdad. That visit was meant to signify Germany's strong interest in reviving economic and business ties. Iraq was historically a strong partner for Germany, and in the 1980s bilateral trade reached about four billion euros a year. German companies are eager to resume cooperation with a country that has ample oil reserves and where reconstruction programmes offer major contracts.
