German army recruits have been sworn in outside the Reichstag in Berlin for the first time in the country's federal history. Chancellor Angela Merkel and German Defence Minister Franz-Josef Jung were among those attending the ceremony which marked the anniversery of a 1944 bomb plot on Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Hitler plot survivor dies aged 90 ... Hitler and form a new government to negotiate with the allies. Stauffenberg managed to plant a bomb on July 20, 1944, which detonated while Hitler was presiding over a military briefing in eastern Prussia. Four men were killed in the blast, but Hitler survived with scarcely a scratch, effectively thwarting the planned coup that had already been set in motion in Berlin. Stauffenberg and most of his co-conspirators were executed within days.
