A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said the PKK freed the Germans in a mountainous area where they were found by Turkish police. It is unclear whether any ransom was paid to secure their release. The trio was seized by separatist rebels from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, on July 8 during a climbing expedition to Mount Ararat. The rebels said they would hold the hostages until Berlin ended its crackdown on PKK supporters in Germany. The PKK, which has been fighting for Kurdish autonomy since 1984, is listed as a terrorist organisation in the European Union and the United States.
