Thousands gathered at the first funeral, that of Ehud Goldwasser, in the northern Israeli town of Nahariya. The other soldier, Eldad Regev, is to be buried later in the day. The two soldiers were abducted in a cross-border Hezbollah raid on July 12, 2006. The attack sparked a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah. The soldiers' fate remained unknown until the handover took place. In return for the two bodies, Israel released five Hezbollah prisoners and handed over almost 200 bodies of Hezbollah and Palestinian fighters.
