Turkey's military says that its soldiers have killed 11 Kurdish guerrillas in an operation in the south-eastern Turkish province of Hakkari.
The operation was launched on Sunday after security forces identified a group of Kurdistan Workers Party militants, known as the PKK, in a mountainous area near the Iraqi border. Meanwhile, Berlin has expressed scepticism over reports from Turkey that a splinter group of the PKK is behind the kidnapping of three Germans last week. An interior ministry official said that intelligence on the PKK says that the group is strictly hierarchical and it is very unlikely that a local group would carry out the kidnapping.
