Malaysian police have arrested opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over allegations that he sodomised a male aide.

Malaysian opposition leader seeks refuge in Turkish embassy ... allegations levelled at him by Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a 23-year-old former aide. Anwar denies the allegations claiming that they are politically motivated. Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said that Anwar is likely to spend the night in detention. In 1998 Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and jailed on sodomy and corruption charges but these charges were quashed by the country's top court in 2004 and he was released.
