In India at least 20 policemen died when a police vehicle was blown up by suspected Maoist rebels in the country's eastern state of Orissa.
The special counter-insurgency unit was hit by a suspected landmine blast while patrolling in a known Maoist stronghold in the far south of the state. The attack comes a fortnight after the rebels sank a police boat and killed 38 officers of an elite anti-Maoist police force unit in the same area. Police said the Maoists had stepped up violence recently in response to a renewed security campaign.
