German Chancellor Angela Merkel has ignited a debate within the grand coalition over the country's phasing out of nuclear energy. The Christian Democratic head told Sunday's Bild am Sonntag newspaper that it would be impossible for Germany to cut greenhouse gas emissions without nuclear power.
Merkel's partners in the grand coalition, the Social Democrats, have vowed to block any attempt to roll back plans to phase-out atomic energy. Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said the SPD would make nuclear power an issue in next year's general election. Germany is scheduled to mothball the last of its 17 nuclear power plants by 2020.
