The German government continues its efforts to win the release of five German hostages being held in Turkey and Nigeria.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to meet Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a Mediterranean Union summit in Paris. She called for the safe release of three mountaineers in Sunday's Bild am Sonntag weekly. Leaders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, the group behind the abductions in eastern Turkey, said Berlin would best be advised by asking Ankara to halt the army's activities in the region. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has confirmed the kidnapping of two German construction workers in Nigeria.
