German Economy Minister Michael Glos has paid a surprise visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
This makes him the first cabinet minister to visit the country since the US-led invasion in 2003. The German Bild am Sonntag weekly reports that he met Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Glos also used his trip to discuss the interest of German companies in Iraq's oil reserves with the Iraqi oil and industry ministers. His trip comes just days ahead of a planned visit by al-Maliki to Berlin.
