The European Commission has pledged 500 million euros in EU aid to rebuild Kosovo's struggling economy at the start of an international donors conference in Brussels that hopes to raise 1.5 billion euros.

Meanwhile Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci has confirmed that the Balkan state has applied for membership of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Only sovereign states can join the World Bank. Kosovo seceded from Serbia in February. Forty-three mainly Western nations recognise an independent Kosovo. Serbia, backed by Russia, does not.
