The bill is yet to be signed by President Vaclav Klaus. The change also concerns nine out of the 27 wards in which elections will be held in October. Klaus has not yet announced the date of the elections to one third of the Senate.
Under law-set deadlines they must start on October 24-25 at the latest. Along with the Senate elections people will also elect regional assemblies. The polls must be held at the latest one week later than the Senate elections. The Senate, the upper house of parliament, was set up in 1996. The election term of 81 senators is six years. One third of the senators are changed every two years.
