United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Georgia amid rising tensions between Tbilisi, Washington and Moscow.
A senior State Department official told reporters that the trip was intended to show support of Georgia's territorial integrity in the face of Russian pressure. Earlier, Russia's foreign ministry in a statement accused Georgia of pushing the South Caucusus region towards war through actions openly supported by the United States. Rice's trip comes a day after she signed a deal allowing Washington to base part of a new US missile defence system in the Czech Republic, prompting a warning from Moscow that it would respond militarily.
